The A-Z Guide to Marriage (G-M)

G = Generosity

Be generous with your spouse. He or she is going to make mistakes, but your reassurance instead of an “I told you so,” or other biting comments, will go a long way. Also, be generous with compliments and material things. Share with your spouse.

H = Health

If you plan to grow old with your husband or wife, you need to take care of yourself. Encourage your spouse to make healthy choices as well. Care for each other when sick, and stand by your spouse through illness or injury.

I = I Statements

You have probably heard this before, but it works. Use “I statements” to communicate about problems or concerns instead of saying things that sound accusatory. Saying “I feel angry” will elicit a better response than “You made me mad.”

J = Justification

When you do something, even if unintentionally, which hurts your spouse, admit it. Apologize sincerely and do what’s necessary to restore the relationship instead of trying to justify your actions.

K = Keeping Score

One of the worst things couples can do is keep score in their marriage. “You owe me,” gets old real quick. Don’t do things for spouse just so you can earn brownie points or make him or her feel obligated. Do things for your husband or wife out of love.

L = Listen

Most of us are not good listeners. We think we are, but we tend to worry more about what to say next, than we do about really hearing what the other person is trying to communicate. Listen with your ears and with your heart.

M = Money

Money can make or break a marriage. Learning to manage money effectively is a serious part of any marriage. Lack of money can definitely hurt a marriage, especially when times get really tough. Work money problems out together instead of taking them out on each other.
