The Art of Female Photography

Did you know that Spock is a famous nude photographer?

It’s true. The one and only Leonard Nimoy, who skyrocketed to fame playing half-Vulcan, half-human Spock on “Star Trek,” is a professional photographer with more than 40 years of picture-taking under his belt. But here’s an even bigger shocker: Spock’s photo subjects of choice are nude women.

For more than a decade Nimoy’s black and white photos of nude and semi-nude females have been displayed in galleries and museums from California to New York. In addition, Nimoy also garnered accolades after his collection of nude photos inspired a critically-acclaimed dance piece.

Nimoy is in good company as many famous photographers have become legends in the field by shooting nude photos of beautiful women. For example, Helmut Newton is arguably the most famous nude photographer in the history of the genre. His work is notably evocative, and often includes sado-masochistic undertones.

Likewise, Edward Weston is often referred to as the most influential nude photographer of the 20th century. His nude images from the 1920s and 1930s are among the most iconic pictures ever documented.

Of course, male photographers are not the only ones who have made a name for themselves in the field of nude female photography. Ellen von Unwerth’s work capturing erotic femininity is legendary. Her stunning images have been published in half a dozen books. In addition, she has shot several short films highlighting the art of sensual female photography.

Then there’s Todd Essick. The famous photographer is known for taking unique and beautiful underwater nude pictures. According to his website, Essick’s goal is to fuse the beauty of the sea with the beauty of the female form in a tribute to Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty. Along with nudes, Essick uses dolphins, stingrays, and other marine life to spice up his awe-inspiring underwater shots.
