The Back to School Challenge

Are your kids back in school? Last week was our first week back after a very long summer (14 weeks) and I honestly don’t know who was happier about school kicking off again! But with the kids back in school, now is a great time to take inventory on where you are in your fitness program. I know a lot of people struggled with their fitness programs over the summer whether it was due to the weather (in Texas it was either blazingly hot or pouring rain), due to having the kids home or due to some other issue.

Back to School Challenge

The first step in any challenge is to look at where you are. Right now, I haven’t had a decent workout in about 4 weeks. I’ve explained some of the dental problems I had over the summer and two weeks ago I had all my wisdom teeth extracted. I’m just starting to get to a point where I can pick up a light workout again, but due to some remaining swelling, I need to not push it until that swelling is gone.

So that’s where I’ve been. Where have you been?

Target Goals

The next step is to decide where we are going. I have that urge to join a gym again, there’s just something about going into one that makes me feel all kinds of motivated. On the other hand, my schedule doesn’t necessarily allow for a gym membership so I’m resisting that for now. I still have my Susan G. Komen Race for the Cure to prep for and while I was very close to my 15 minute mile previously, 4 weeks of down time is going to take some recovery.

So my first goal is to get back into the routine, I want to walk a minimum of 30 minutes a day and work my strength training back up to three times a week targeting upper, core and lower body. Again, I still have some swelling, so I will make my target date to resume my workout schedule September 10. That’s another week to rest and recover. I can still do leisure walking and I’ve resumed that.

While leisure walking may not build stamina or burn lots of calories, some activity is always better than no activity.

What goals do you have?

We’re going to keep talking about our Back to School Challenge this week and what you can do to rebuild your fitness schedule. Do you have a fitness story to tell? Send it in and I’ll publish it right here.

Welcome back to school folks!
