The Ballad of Little Joe (2003)

balladIn this VeggieTales movie, apparently Bob and Larry had a misunderstanding. Larry thought Bob said they could do a Western-themed story, and Bob wants to do a Bible story. After some compromising, they agree to do a Western-Bible story, and thus “The Ballad of Little Joe” is born.

Little Joe, played by Larry the Cucumber, is a very beloved son. One of twelve, he is favored about all the others, and for his birthday, he gets an embroidered vest. This doesn’t sit well with the brothers (played by the French peas) who only got mittens for their birthdays. Their jealousy is only made worse when Little Joe tells them he had a dream that they all bowed down to him. They decide to throw him down an abandoned mine shaft, then change their minds and sell him to some desperados. Little Joe tells them to come to their senses, but they ride off with him anyway.

As the story follows the Bible tale of Joseph and the Coat of Many Colors, we see the vegetables put their own spin on the story. Joe is framed for theft, and that’s why he’s thrown into jail (that’s a little more child-appropriate than the actual reason) and while there, he teaches the other inmates how to quilt. Later on, when he is put in charge of gathering food for the drought, he collects several silos full of pizza. Hey, whatever works, right?

The family is reunited to live happily ever after, having learned the lesson that when we don’t end up where we wanted to be, God had a better plan in mind all along.

Our “Silly Song with Larry” is one of my favorites. The Veggies spoof the boy bands with their own version, “Boyz in the Sink.” They’ve decided to express themselves artistically and they do so with great style with “The Belly Button Song,” in which they harmoniously sympathize with Mr. Lunt who has no belly button. I get the giggles just thinking about it.

So whether you’re a parent, a kid, or a potato, put “The Ballad of Little Joe” on your shopping list – you’ll be glad you did.
