Although I am too young to have enjoyed the American invasion of the mop tops, I may be able to relive a small part of it today, Valentine’s Day.
Apple Inc. (the Mac company) has acquired the first direct download rights to the entire catalogue of the Beatles music. Rumor has it that these songs will be made available today, February 14th, in the iTunes music store. The digital versions of the Beatles songs will be available in iTunes exclusively for the first three months.
I can’t yet confirm this as fact. One of the things that Apple is pretty good at is secrecy and making big splashes with new products.
This is a huge step for the two “Apple” companies, the Beatles and the Mac. They have been battling it out for a while over the Apple name: Apple Corps (the Beatles) and Apple Inc. (formerly Apple Computer). In the past, Apple Corps adamantly refused to move the Beatles music to MP3s.
Another rumor has it that in honor of this huge event, Apple Inc. will be launching a “Yellow Submarine” iPod. How cool is that, if you are a Beatles fan like I am? According to Wired News, this special edition iPod could be available to consumers today, or at least sometime this week. This iPod would be yellow, of course.
One of the exciting things about this resolution to the battle between the two Apples is that now Apple Inc. is free to act as a music company. As such, it can pre-load music onto its iPod. The Yellow Submarine iPod may just have the entire catalogue of Beatles songs already loaded, saving consumers from hours of downloading.
So watch your iTunes music store and the Apple Inc. website. Meanwhile, I’ll be singing the lyrics to Beatles songs all day, such as “I Wanna Hold Your iPod,” “We All Live in A Yellow iPod Submarine,” “Love, Love My iPod,” etc.
