The Bedroom Situation

Does each child need their own bedroom? When you’re buying or building a home one important consideration is the number of bedrooms and whether you want each child to have their own bedroom or expect them to share a room. As an only child I always had my own room and I liked to be able to go there to read or as I grew older to play music.

My husband grew up sharing a room with his brother. It wasn’t a large room. Basically all it got used for was sleeping or maybe lying on the bed reading, as there wasn’t much room for anything else.

If a child has their own room they can personalize it and make it their own, in the way it is decorated and the things they surround themselves with. This is not so easy with a shared room.

When it came time for our family, I was a big advocate that each child should have their own room. I’d seen the benefits of being able to retreat when I wanted to, to my own room to be alone. After having shared a room, Mick was keen for our children to each have their own room too. We only had two children, so the bedroom situation was never a problem.

Both of our children used to play at times in their room and read and listen to music. If a young friend came over to play, they were still able to play in the bedroom if they wanted to or they played in the lounge room or outside. If they play in the bedroom it doesn’t create as much mess in family areas.

Our son has two young children who share a room and are both happy to this stage to do so. I suspect that will change as they grow older.

It will depend too on the size of the rooms as to what they can do in it. Do you want it to be just a place for sleeping, or will children play in their bedroom at times?

Of course back in our day we never had computers and TVs only were in the lounge room. Even as our children were growing up, they did not have a computer or TV in their room as neither of us believes in the idea and anyway we only ever had one computer or one TV so it needed to be where everyone could watch or use it.

So before you buy or build a house, think about how many bedrooms you want and whether each child should have their own room.
