The Believer – Stephanie Black

vfdreImagine the end times of the world. America has divided itself in two, and the new portion, where our story takes place, is appropriately called New America. Everything is closely monitored. There is no crime, for everyone is watched and anyone who tries a criminal action is dealt with. Everything is equal and it’s all perfect, except for one thing – there is no freedom. It is, in essence, a land that exactly mirrors the existence Satan would have had for us – no choices, with everyone doing exactly as they should all the time.

Ian Roshek is a history professor in New America, and he has been studying how things were before his country broke off. Most precious to him is a copy of the Book of Mormon, a book considered contraband and very illegal. Religious free-thinking is not allowed in New America. Not at all.

Risking everything he has, including his life, for his newfound beliefs, Ian wants to share the light he has found with his sister Jill, but she is afraid he is delusional. Turning to her influential boyfriend for help, she thinks she is doing what’s best for Ian, but he soon finds himself set to be disciplined for straying from the program. Alisa Kent, police interrogator, is assigned to Ian’s case, but finds herself not sure if she believes in what she’s doing anymore, especially in the face of this man who is so sure of what he’s saying, he’s willing to die for it.

Through page after page of twists and turns, you’ll never see what’s coming next in this work of LDS speculative fiction by author Stephanie Black. A dark web of complicated conspiracies, a nation held hostage, and the light of the gospel shining through it all – this book has it all, and just when you think you can breathe easy, it grabs you by the throat again. I loved this book and can’t wait for the sequel.
