The Benefits of a Food Journal

I was recently reading about the benefits of a food journal. A food journal will give you a clear picture about your eating habits. Researchers believe that a food journal gives you a better chance at losing weight. Why? When it is all laid out before you, then you gain an understanding of what specific changes you need to make.

I like journaling in general. Journaling is therapeutic for me. It is also a great way to note life’s up and down moments. I can see how a food journal would do the same. You might notice a pattern where a certain time of day is your greatest weakness for something sweet. Or you may notice that sure, you had a salad for lunch but you also drowned it in salad dressing.

A food journal can show you where you are doing things right and where you need to make some adjustments. You don’t have to rely on memory. Besides, many times we get this idea in our head of what our eating habits are like. However we may be deceiving ourselves so with a food journal tracking it, we can know for sure.

It is also recommended that your food journal include any exercising that you did. Make notations in your journal of the specific type of exercise you did and for how long.

Without a plan it is pretty hard to be successful at losing weight. A food journal can be a guide in developing your plan. After keeping track of things for a week you can go back and look at your habits and patterns. From there you can develop a new eating and exercise plan.

If losing weight has become a losing battle for you, then try implementing a food journal. Personally I have been really struggling with how I am stuck at this particular point in my weight loss goals. I think if I start keeping track of my eating and exercise, I will find a way to get past it.

Of course I would love to hear from others who have successfully used a food journal. Drop a note if you have any tips or encouraging words on using one.
