Why work? Why yes, I know that you need the money. But work has a lot of other benefits that you may not have considered. If you’re thinking of taking on a part time position after being out of the workforce or you’re considering freelancing, here are a few reasons why that job may be even more valuable than you think.
It’s about your health. Depending on where you work, you may or may not receive health benefits at your job. Depending on your home and health situation and your partner’s insurance, a job that is pays poorly but has health benefits can still be a fantastic deal for your family.
If your job is flexible enough to allow you to come in during school hours or work from home, that’s fabulous. A job that has a small commute or no commute and allows you to work when the kids are busy saves on child care while making money.
If a job offers child care benefits or a good leave package when you have a baby, this is important. So are nursing and pumping rooms, since they facilitate your ability to nurse your child. What about the sick day policy? Some companies allow you to take a sick day when the kids are sick and are more understanding about the fact that parents tend to need more sick time at home.
A job is also good far beyond the duration of the job. It can provide you with a social outlet and networking that can lead to additional work in the future. Even if the job is only part time, it builds your resume and can act as a stepping stone to additional career opportunities. A job with lower pay that connects you to a community of other people who have other, higher-paying jobs for you might not be a bad choice if you’re reentering the workforce.
