I am quickly discovering that one of the key components to maintaining a fitness routine is to find the best time of day to exercise. If you don’t find your niche you will be floundering around. I have been doing some of that lately.
My problem is that I do better with schedules and routines. During the school year I am forced to be awake by a certain time in order to get my children ready for school. Now that summer is here, I find myself getting up at different times with different things on my agenda.
The lazy days of summer, coupled with the benefits of being able to work from home have actually been working against me lately. I mess up one day and I have it in my mind that I have to wait until the beginning of the following week to start all over again. Last week my routine got messed up by spending two days out of my home all day long.
I wanted to “start all over” again this week but yesterday we celebrated the fourth of July with friends all day. I spent the entire morning preparing food and the rest of the day eating and hanging out. There went my start of the new week.
I should have started all over again today but guess what? It is now 3:00 in the afternoon and I have absolutely no desire to exercise. I know I should put this laptop down and get going. However working out in the afternoon is very challenging for me. What I need in the afternoon is my pick-me-up, a cup of coffee, not sweating.
I know that for me the best time of day to exercise is right away in the morning. After I have had my first cup of coffee for the day, before I even eat breakfast, is the best time. It’s when I am most motivated and have the greatest amount of energy. However if I skip that time, that ideal time for me, the chances of getting in some exercise is very slim.
I think everyone should figure out the best time of day to exercise. Once you discover that, you have to stick with it. I would love to say, “I will start again next week.” But I know that I need to start again tomorrow…tomorrow morning, bright and early.
