Bird Box is a Netflix movie that stars Sandra Bullock. She plays a mom (named Melanie) who has two young children (named Boy and Girl). The movie is scary, and the characters must cover their eyes with blindfolds in order to avoid seeing the “monster”.
The movie has inspired a new, unsafe, challenge. People (teenagers and adults) are covering their eyes so they cannot see anything. Next, they attempt to navigate around like the characters in Bird Box do. This has led to some dangerous outcomes.
CBS News reported that a 17-year-old girl in Layton, Utah, crashed her car while wearing a blindfold. She was doing the Bird Box challenge. A 16-year-old was also in the car.
The Layton Police tweeted a photo of two, damaged, vehicles. One was a pick up truck with a bent front bumper. The other was a smaller vehicle, a car, that had the entire driver’s side crushed. Fortunately, no one was hurt.
Netflix does not approve of the Bird Box challenge. The company tweeted: “Can’t believe I have to say this, but: PLEASE DO NOT HURT YOURSELVES WITH THIS BIRD BOX CHALLENGE. We don’t know how this started, and we appreciate the love, but Boy and Girl have just one wish for 2019 and it is that you not end up in the hospital due to memes.”
There are things parent can do to prevent their teenagers and children from trying the Bird Box challenge. Ask them if they know what the Bird Box challenge is. Ask if they have tried it, or if a friend has tried it.
Next, explain to your kids that people have gotten hurt while doing the Bird Box challenge. Let them know that do not have to try the Bird Box challenge just because their friends want to do it. Make sure your kids understand that you love them, and want to keep them safe from harm.
