So it happened. Our son turned 1 year old. So crazy how fast this has gone. I’ll join the chorus of voices telling you how fast it goes (and it’s only been one year). I have a small (very very small) taste of how fast babies turn into adults. That first year of life is amazing. They learn so many new things. They learn to eat, sleep, grab, crawl, walk, talk, drink, laugh, smile, cry, play, and pout. They learn so much in such a short time that it is truly hard to comprehend. When we took our son to his first movie (“Babies”) it was one of many firsts in his short life. All of these firsts led up to a very amazing first: turning 1!
As parents, grandparents, uncles and aunts (and a great-uncle) surrounded our son he was presented with a birthday hat (made by two of his aunts). He didn’t really like it until he saw it. As he was presented with two cakes (both handmade by his Mother) and a candle he became a little confused. Once everyone started singing he was really confused. When they reached his name a light bulb turned on and he knew that they were all there for him. He knew that this was something special. He smiled and laughed!
He didn’t really know what to do with the candle (Mom helped him blow it out) but once a HUGE piece of chocolate cake was set in front of him (without any utensils) he quickly figured out what needed to be done and he dug in. By the end of the day he was covered in cake; his relatives were covered in smiles; and the house was filled with love. His first birthday was a great success. Son, I wish you many many more of them.
