The scriptures are a very important tool available to us in our daily lives. The scriptures teach us the word of God. They provide guidance to us in difficult situations. They can bring us comfort in times of pain and sorrow. The scriptures can become more and more familiar the more you that you study them and partake of the words.
I was blessed to have a mother who taught me to read the scriptures. When I was little she read me the stories from the scriptures. She set up a family scripture reading time every night as well. She also read the scriptures herself on a daily basis. She did this unobtrusively, but because she did it so regularly I learned from her example. This example helped me to begin to study on my own at a young age.
My scripture study has evolved as I have grown up. There have been times when I have truly thirsted after the words in the scriptures. The stories have come alive as I have read them. The counsel that the prophets of old give is still relevant to the situations I face on a daily basis.
A few years ago I decided to read the Book of Mormon a book at time. I did end up dividing Alma into three days, but other than that I read a book a day. This was a wonderful experience, because it really put the history and the stories into perspective. Since I read it so quickly I noticed patterns that I hadn’t before. It helped me to realize how much the Book of Mormon is really written for our day.
I also really enjoy studying by topic and learning what the different prophets had to say about certain specific items. It is wonderful to see the way that the teachings work together to clarify certain points. It is a real testimony builder to see that the teachings are consistent.
I am grateful for the scriptures. It is important that I take the time to truly study them each day. They provide counsel and comfort to me through my life. They are truly a blessing. How has reading the scriptures blessed your life?
