By composting, you can reduce the amount of trash you generate by at least a third. There are also many other benefits to composting, both for the environment and for you.
Most people put off composting because they either don’t understand how to do it or they think that food waste just decomposes in the landfill anyway and doesn’t add to the problem of trash. Well, for the first issue of not knowing how, you can refer to this blog post series that tells you all about how to compost:

For the second reason, you might be surprised to know that even perishable foods can cause a huge problem for the environment. This is because the food scraps that make their way into the landfill usually don’t have an environment with very much oxygen, something that is needed for a natural breakdown of the material. Instead, as the food decays, it produces large amounts of methane gas, which is even more harmful to the atmosphere than carbon dioxide.
By making your own compost, you have a ready bit of nutrients on hand for your garden. And growing your own food is an amazing way to reduce your carbon footprint. There are no shipping costs involved when you grow your own food, and hopefully there are no pesticides or chemical fertilizers, either.
Compost is known as “black gold” because of the rich soil it becomes. In fact, natural compost is very much sought out by farmers and gardeners alike. If you produce enough compost, you may be able to start your own local business selling it!
Composting is so important, that San Francisco made history when it implemented the very first mandatory composting law.
