Recently my children and I watched “The Challenge”. We are great fans of the Olsen twins and have several of their movies. “The Challenge” was filmed when the girls were older and is based on a television reality show.
The girls, playing Shane and Lizzie, do not get along since their parents’ divorce two years ago. Shane lives in LA with one parent and Lizzie loves in Washington with the other. The twin girls are completely opposite. Shane loves nature and is a laid back environmentalist. She is also a vegetarian. Lizzie is more into comfort and less of a nature lover. She wants to take on more of a business approach in life.
Unknowingly, both girls applied to be on a game show, The Challenge, in order to win a college scholarship. The Challenge is much like the television show Fear Factor. The contestants are broken into two teams and have to test their skills by completing different challenges.
The girls were purposely put together on the show and on the same team by an intern who worked for the television station. The same intern ends up falling for one of the girls later in the show.
In the beginning the two girls argue and cause their team to lose the challenges. However by the end the two girls are working together and the team begins doing much better.
Both girls find romance during the competition. In the end all works out well. The two girls work out their differences and become close once again. They also get the scholarship.
This was the typical show for young girls. I think that most girls about ages 8-12 would really enjoy this movie. While it is appropriate for younger girls and for boys too, it is the typical young “chick flick” story.
The movie is very clean. It does have some challenges in which the contestants have to eat snakes and bugs. The girls also share a kiss with the boys .
