The Claims Adjuster Called About the Puddle on the Floor

phone This all started with a puddle on the floor. It was in the corner of a room, and not under a window. My best guess was that the water came in through the wall while it was raining really hard outside. Our next step, as we work through the claims process, is for the claims adjuster to come over and take a look at things.

If you haven’t been following my blogging about the puddle on the floor, allow me to quickly catch you up. First, I noticed a puddle on the floor in the corner of a bedroom that my husband and I use as a studio. We both work from home. It had been raining really hard, so we figure that somehow, the rain leaked in through the wall. How much damage did the water cause? We didn’t know.

Our first step was to call our homeowners insurance company and explain the situation. The insurance agent asked a series of questions about the puddle on the floor. She contacted a local repair company for us. The repair company then called us, and we made an appointment for them to come over and assess the damages.

The repair company arrived on time. Two very nice guys came in and used a hand held moisture detector device to determine how much water was hiding behind the wall where the water came in. Fortunately, most of the walls were dry. They took a look at the outside of the house, and did not see anything alarming. Always good!

The next step is for a claims adjuster to come out and take a look at the wall where the water came in. He will make a determination about how much it will cost to do whatever repairs are necessary. He called today to make an appointment to come do that. My husband and I set up a time for him to come over tomorrow.

The claims adjuster reminded us that our homeowners policy comes with a $500 deductible. We will have to pay down that deductible before the insurance company will start paying for the cost of the repair. It is up to us to decide how much, if any, repairs we choose to make. I believe it would be best for us to call the repair company that was already here and have them do whatever repairs are needed.
