The Comforts of Home

I don’t know about everybody else, but when I don’t feel well, I long for the comforts of home. I became sick this week, running a temperature of 102.7 (high for me) and all I wanted to do was go home and relax. Then, all I wanted to do was stay home.

I snuggled up into my bed with my favorite quilt and chenille throw (even though it was 85 degrees). I piled up the bed pillows, shams, and accent pillows and made myself a soft retreat. Between tasks and errands I could not avoid, I retreated. I read there. I ate there. I watched TV there. I rested.

Today, my fever is only 100.5, so I’m almost good as new. What do you do when you’re sick? What about when your kids are sick?

When my kids are sick, they usually want to be on the couch. I bring out their favorite pillows and blankets, and for the younger kiddos, a favorite stuffed animal or other “friend.” I fluff up the pillows and set them up with everything they need so it’s in reach. A drink, tissue, wastebasket, book, coloring stuff, remote… and anything else that seems appropriate at the time. They’re surrounded by stuff.

Of course, I’m right there to check on them often, to touch the forehead, kiss a cheek, give a hug, ask what I can do. In trying to get them to eat something, they know they can usually get me to make just about anything for them (as long as it’s not bad for what ails them). I’m usually available for a few games of cards or to color a picture or watch a cartoon as well.

We each get our own hand towel when we’re sick too and lots of Lysol or disinfectant gets sprayed. Instead of making it seem like “yuck,” I try to make having one’s own towel feel special. My youngest has a cute one with a puppy on it.

Do you and your family have routines for when family members don’t feel well?
