The Do it Yourself Decorator’s Toolbox

Is it possible to have too many decorating items? My husband seems to think so, but I just don’t see it. I love to decorate and I’m always on the look out for great supplies, materials, and tools, but there are a few staples every do it yourself decorator should keep on hand.

Measuring Tape

The old adage says, “measure twice, cut once,” and it’s all too true. It’s best to get in the habit of using careful measurements instead of “eyeballing,” whether you’re woodworking, using fabric, or doing landscaping. Whatever type of project you’re working on, measure, measure, measure.

Clamps

Bar clamps, C-clamps, hand clamps, spring clamps, vices, and most any other kind of adjustable clamp, will help make doing it yourself easier. It’s tricky to hold two pieces of wood together while trying to hold a drill or hammer in your other hand. Use clamps to hold your items in place while you work; you’ll need less time and you’ll suffer less frustration and fewer injuries.

Scissors

This is a given, but you need more than one pair of good scissors. A pair of kitchen scissors will work for many projects, but it is important to keep one pair of quality sewing scissors, or fabric scissors, and use them only on fabric. Then, when you want to make a nice, clean, smooth cut, you’ll be able to and you won’t have ragged edges and unraveling threads (with most fabrics – for those that unravel, fold over the edge and secure it before continuing with your project).

Glue

Glue is one of the best things ever. Wood glue, craft glue, washable fabric glue, school glue, hot glue, glue sticks… If you do much decorating, you’ll end up with all of these and then some, and you’ll definitely notice if you run out, so pick up extras during those back to school sales!

Paint

Another great thing to pick up during back to school sales or craft sales is craft paint. Grab craft paint in all your favorite colors, and especially in colors that coordinate with your existing décor. It’s great for touch ups as well as giving new life to old accessories, and you can always use it for new projects as well. Don’t forget to add a couple of quality paintbrushes too. A pin striping brush will come in handy for lettering, striping, and other tiny or intricate details.
