The Dukan Diet

Last week I watched a segment on “The View” that covered the “Dukan Diet.” There have apparently been some rumors that Kate Middleton was on this diet in order to prepare for her wedding. Of course, that has not been confirmed.

The Dukan Diet consists of four phases which are the attack phase, cruise phase, consolidation phase, and ending with the stabilization phase.

The attack phase of the Dukan Diet allows for you to eat mostly protein items such as seafood, lean meat, fish, poultry, turkey, dairy, oat and a few other items. This lasts from two to seven days, a week maximum.

The next phase is the cruise phrase which you stick to until you reach your goal weight. In this phase you can keep eating the same items in the attack phase but now you are adding fruits and vegetables. However you are keeping away from starchy food items, such as potatoes or rice.

Consolidation and stabilization are the next phases where you eat lots of protein one day a week and the rest of the week stick to a typical, healthy diet. However in the consolidation phase you can also add additional food items such as bread and cheese, along with two portions each week of a starchy food item.

Also, you stay in the consolidation phase five days for each pound you have lost. So if you have lost ten pounds, then you would remain in the consolidation phase for 50 days.

In the stabilization phase you are allowed two of what are called “celebration meals.”

Now beside the phases, you are also encouraged to incorporate exercise into your routine such as walking for at least 20 minutes everyday.

The Dukan Diet has been compared to the Adkin’s diet, which consists of a lot of protein and introduction of fruits and vegetables. However not everyone agrees that the Adkin’s diet is very safe. So the safety of the Dukan diet remains to be seen.
