The First Day of School

Does your family have a tradition for the first day of school? We do. Since our kids regularly ride the bus, we always drive them to school the first day. It’s a family affair and we all walk the kids to class, starting with the youngest.

Well, it’s changed a little now. With one currently in middle school and one in high school, we basically get to walk them to the front door of the building and say goodbye. Oh, how I remember holding their hands and taking them to their classes. It doesn’t seem so long ago. I was informed that we are welcome to go to open house. They actually want to be seen with their parents? I’ll take what I can get.

Anyway, back to the first day of school for younger children. It really helps ease tension if you take your child to school, walk him or her to class, and wait around for at least a couple of minutes while your son or daughter gets settled. Let your little one put his things away, find his cubby and his desk, and get himself settled.

If you’re lucky, your kiddo will be excited and ready to go play with the other children. If your child feels shy or is worried about staying without you, reassure your her that you will be back or that you will be waiting when she gets off the bus.

Another tip: If the first day of school is a full day, you might want to prepare lunches for your children. That first day back is a little chaotic for the lunchroom or cafeteria staff, just like it is for everyone else. The meals don’t tend to be very inspired on the first day of school. Send a nice homemade treat and slip a little note into your youngster’s lunch to let her know that you’re thinking of her.
