The wintery flurries we experienced yesterday have overnight turned to a wintery wonderland. We have our first snow day of the season.
If being anxious for Christmas wasn’t enough, my kids are about to get a huge surprise. I can hear them just beginning to stir upstairs, and in a few minutes I will hear the shouts for joy. For my daughter, as soon as she pops out of bed and sees the surprise, she will run down the stairs declaring that Christmas is here and that we must put up the tree immediately.
Looking out of our windows is a scene that could be from Currier & Ives, a wooded expanse filled with gently falling snow. The pine cones have heavy blankets of the white stuff, and a lone cardinal sits serenely in the branches, knowing that his brilliant red color is a foil for the white surrounding him.
Here in my household, I am repeatedly trying the school district’s school closing line. I can’t get through on the telephone, and the Internet website is telling me that there is no news. Since there are several inches on the ground and the fat flakes continue to fall, I can’t imagine that school will be on, especially since our school district is in a mostly rural area. Still, it would be nice to know the final decision, so everyone can get on with the day.
If school is in, it is the normal rushing around morning routine. If school is out, well then it means a change for the day, such as sleeping in, hot pancakes, digging up snow suits and sledding down the driveway, and altering the work schedule.
I’m sure the neighbor kids will be out and ready to play with us, so snacks will be in order as well. I look forward to snow days, especially the first one. There is always that joy to be had that I feel through my children and that brings me back to my own childhood.
Have you had your first snow day, yet? What does your household look like on those days?
