The First Thanksgiving Website

This gorgeous website from Scholastic teaches kids and adults all about the first Thanksgiving, with a realistic perspective and plenty of activities for children and adults.

“They spent two months at sea to reach a strange new world, and barely survived once they got there.

“Learn how the Pilgrims reached America and lived to celebrate the first Thanksgiving.”

I have to say that Scholastic really came through with this website all about the first Thanksgiving. The website packages the first Thanksgiving much like a reality television show, complete with photos and three live chats where students can ask questions and learn the intimate details of event and the lives of the participants.

The website is so easy to navigate, with three distinct areas for exploration: Voyage on the Mayflower, Daily Life, and The Thanksgiving Feast.

Daily Life compares and contrasts housing, clothes, food, chores, school and games of the Pilgrims and Native Americans. Voyage on the Mayflower lets visitors take a virtual 3,000 mile journey along with the pilgrims and explore the Mayflower ship. In the section of The Thanksgiving Feast, there is a slideshow and an online game that can be played. Each section is also full of fun facts and lots of educational information.

In addition there are book recommendations that parents and educators can use to fill out the educational experience.

One of the features that rates high on the cool for kids scale is the Letters From History section. Here you will be able to sign up three letters from a young girl who is traveling on the Mayflower and three letters from a young Native American boy. It is a way to really bring the facts and insights home to kids and open up plenty of discussions.

The live chat, mentioned above, will take place three times during the day on Thursday, November 15th.

If you have kids, be sure to stop by this website this month. Just click here: http://www.scholastic.com/scholastic_thanksgiving/
