The Fitness Blog Week in Review for February 3 – 9

Good morning and welcome to Saturday. Whew, am I glad it’s the end of the week! I’m tired. There are a lot of things going on in my life right now, some good, some great and some that are not as bad as they could be. I found out more about my own health condition this week and I scheduled my surgery. I also started substitute teaching in my school district this week and that was a tremendous lot of fun! We’ve managed to pack so much into this week and next week and the week after, that I am overloaded with things to say and to share. But we’ll talk about more of that later.

In the meanwhile, let’s get to our Fitness Blog week in review and go over the stories that you may have missed this week.

Saturday, February 3

We took the day off here, at least from the Fitness blog. I posted the Week in Review for the previous week, but we enjoyed some good quiet time.

Sunday, February 4

Planning Ahead – Want to Walk a Mile? explored the idea that all of us can walk a mile, even the most sedentary of us, as long as we’re willing to put one foot in front of the other. In Be Your Own Yoda: How to Keep Yourself Going offers some information on being self-motivated. In Fitness Challenges: Power Yoga, Clarissa explains the different interpretations for a truly challenging yoga workout. In My Little Inspiration: Our Local 1-Mile Walk explored more about my daughter’s goals in both hoops for hearts and her desire to walk a mile in a local walk/run that our home owner’s association is hosting. Finally in Top Ten Yoga Class Tips here are is a list that covers the etiquette of being in a yoga class – some of it is common sense and others are humorous but useful information.

Monday, February 5

In Fitness in the News: Disturbing Trends in Obesity Treatments includes a new move by some physicians to perform obesity surgery on pre-teens and teenagers. The Yoga Path: Finding My Headstand – can you imagine performing a headstand away from a wall? Clarissa could and as it was a part of her training, she details how she did it. Three Fun Yoga Poses for Kids includes the poses that kids find most entertaining and it’s enough to get them involved in yoga practice.

Tuesday, February 6

On Friday, I shared the details of what was going on following a standard physical with my doctor, in Update: My Ordeal & What the Doctor Said I related the better news that my visit to the specialist on Monday gave me. In the News: Bush Tells Parents to Get Their Kids Outside and while his advice is good, some think that the initiatives would be better received if the temperatures outside were warmer. In Moderation in the Yogic Lifestyle – Where Does Caffeine Fit in? Clarissa described how she gave up caffeine and the reasons why.

Wednesday, February 7

Do you know The Four Kinds of Walking? Most of the time, we think of walking as putting one foot in front of the other – and we’re not wrong. In a really interesting article, Clarissa offers some insights into Why Yoga Might Help You Quit Smoking and considering my own struggle with this bad habit, this is a great article! Do you have The Perfect Yoga Mat and do you know how to find it?

Dear Heather … Am I Overdoing It? details one reader’s concerns about the way she is performing her workout with a light workout in the morning and a more intense one in the evening. We took a good look at Fitness Tips: Do You Know What the FIT Formula Is? There is a lot to be said for the FIT Formula and utilizing it will allow you to modify your own workout. Have you ever wondered What Should I Be Doing During Meditation? Clarissa answers the question.

Does Your Child Get Enough ZzzZzzz’s? One problem our children have is not enough sleep and too little sleep can contribute to obesity in our children as well as other health issues. In Valentine Fitness Tip: Ballroom Dancing we take a look at some fun you can do both for your physical heart health and your emotional heart health. Finally in The Idiot Box & Fitness can you believe that a recent study suggests that watching television may not hamper our children’s physical activities as much as we may have thought?
