Two years ago my mom bought me new luggage for Christmas. Initially I told her that my current set still had a few good years left in it and tried to talk her out of the purchase. Looking back I am so glad that she went with her gut and got it for me. The bags she gifted me with are lighter, stronger and better designed to handle traveling with kids. What’s more, they include 360-degree swivel wheels, which I find to be invaluable when you are carrying a kid with one arm and dragging your luggage with the other.
This year luggage manufacturers have come out with new designs that are fashionable, functional and fully accessorized for today’s multi-tasking traveler. For example:
SkyRoll. This bag just came out a few months ago and retails for $200. It’s a wheeled carry-on that features two compartments, including an easy-access top-loading one with organizer pockets for personal electronics and other odds and ends. The accompanying garment bag is designed to reduce wrinkles and creases and wraps tightly around the suitcase. The garment bag is held in place with Velcro and cinch straps. You can use both pieces individually or take them on a trip as a set.
CaseLogic. The company recently introduced a 22-inch Expandable Upright Roller, which retails for $179. The bag is made of semi-rigid EVA (a type of durable plastic) and features an expandable main compartment, integrated water bottle holder and removable laptop shuttle that can handle most 15-inch laptops. CaseLogic also introduced a new messenger-style computer bag and 29-inch rolling duffel this year as well.
Green Laptop Bags. It was only a matter of time before someone came out with an environmentally friendly laptop bag. Shoreline, which is known for its soft-sided laptop jackets, is in the process of becoming Act 2 in an effort to make all of its products from 100% recycled materials. The company currently features an All Around jacket in three colors and seven sizes, which features a back zipper for easy port access. It retails for $40.
