We are the tape fan club around here. In the dollar section of our local department store are rolls of masking tape, and these play heavily into my daughter’s art and craft projects. We do adore tape, since it works well with recycled materials, random scraps of paper, and just about anything else. Your preschooler can create sculptures from it or decorate a fancy letter. Oh yes: it is also useful for sticking one thing to another.
Recently I discovered Japanese paper tape. I am sure that some of you who are scrapbooking-inclined have discovered this long ago, but I am not usually inclined that way. However, Japanese paper tape appeals to the girly-pattern-lover in my daughter and in me, and it also appeals to the loves-taping-anything crafter in us as well.
Japanese paper tape is tape with patterns on it. You apply the tape to a card or to a craft project like you would masking tape. Interested in decorating an old can and turning it into a modern masterpiece to house some pens? Paper tape and origami paper will give any container a fabulous look.
We’re going to use ours as seed tape, among other things. We plan to press flower seeds into the tape and then stick it to paper flowers that we can place in the ground. It’s the perfect preschooler party favor.
If you are really feeling crafty and want to get even more tape-involved, how about creating some inspired fabric tape as well? Simply get an old strip of fancy fabric and some double-sided tape, then place a piece of tape on a non-stick surface. Place the fabric on the top side of the tape, then cut it to size with a fabric cutter. Adults should be the only ones using the fabric cutter, of course. And there you go – fancy tape.
