The Good China

I went to an amazing garage sale the other day. If I’d had five hundred dollars or so, I would have walked out with some bargains. There were antique fabric-covered chairs, a gorgeous engraved hallway table, and cutlery to die for. It was the most expensive garage sale that I had ever been to, and I loved it, even if I could only afford a magazine rack. It is a nice magazine rack, let me tell you.

Our house is not nearly as chic as that garage sale. In fact, if you could walk into my kitchen you’d be amazed that I’m writing about home décor at all. If there was ever a kitchen that said, “In Sorry Need of a Renovation,” then it is this kitchen.

Our plates leave something to be desired too. When we first set up house together, my husband and I got a dish set from the local supermarket. One rarely finds fine china at the local supermarket. This set is now chipped and cracked and very, very mismatched. It has now been paired with some hand-me-down bowls of my grandfather’s. This is why we use the good china.

I love the idea of good china. Unfortunately, I am not as keen on the idea of entertaining people and actually using it. We got a lovely set of dishes and cutlery for our wedding, and for a number of years they sat in a drawer, basically unused. After a while, I looked at the stained and cracked dish set we were using and looked at the dishes in the drawers, and thought that it was time.

Every night, we eat with our best dishes and cutlery. It makes us feel good, it makes our dinner table look good, and really, why wait? My daughter is well past the plate-throwing stage, and our china is lovely.
