After nine years of marriage, I finally decided that it was time to break out the good china. For many years, we have had a set of plain white plates and dollar store style cutlery. It has sufficed, but it’s not that fancy. Over the years, our white plates that we got as students have become chipped, stained, and dinged. Likely they were not really designed to last a lot longer than a university degree. We’ve stretched them nearly three times that much. It’s no wonder that they were looking a little sparse and worse for wear.
For our wedding, we ordered nice plates and matching cups. We use the plates, only because the white ones have started to depopulate over time and we wouldn’t have anything to eat on otherwise. However, the cups are all sitting nearly untouched on the shelf, waiting for someone important to use them.
Then there was the cutlery. It was delightfully mismatched, somewhat bent, and definitely looked its age. We had a profusion of forks and almost no spoons, for some reason. And don’t even ask if anything matched.
In another drawer in our kitchen there was the good cutlery. It’s been there for years, untouched except when we have company. Let’s just say we’re not big entertainers. As part of my post-vacation purge, I decided that enough was enough. Out with the old china and cutlery, in with the stuff we never use. Enough waiting. It’s time to use the good china and cutlery, and use it right now. We deserve it.
Now we have a cutlery drawer that is not only organized, it has spoons. Two sets of spoons – small and large. Wonder of wonders. I suspect that it won’t last long, but so be it. With our fabulous new cutlery, now we can pretend that we’re adults.
Do you save items in your home for a special occasion and scrimp on the everyday? What would happen if you decided to use them instead?
