Yesterday, I talked about the sample blogs, and how to make sure that your blogs are what Lisa is looking for (funny, on-topic, correct length, etc.) Today, I wanted to cover the biography portion of the application. From the Blog for Us page…
4. About You – Please provide us with a short bio about you and your family, including your name and city or location. Please also send your resume, your qualifications and your experience in the topic area(s) you are applying for.
The biography is a simple one; you’ve done it often enough. “Hi, my name is Havilah Lyon; I have been married to my wonderful husband, Doug, for five years. We live in southern Idaho, close to our families, and we love it here! I have held many jobs in a wide variety of environments from working at home to working in a warehouse to working in an office as a secretary. I think my experiences with my jobs will help others in figuring out what they want to do in their own work life. I am currently going back to school to become an elementary ed teacher, a dream I have had all my life. Yadda yadda yadda.” Minus the yadda’ing, of course.
Notice in my paragraph, I covered not only my name, my family, and my location, but I also covered my experience and qualifications in the topic I cover (Jobs.) I could have gone more in-depth, and I would recommend that you do so in your application, but here, I am covering that with the yadda’s. Yes, I’m lazy, but remember, we covered that in the first blog of this series; nothing has changed, promise.
At this point, I would copy and paste my resume into the document, so Lisa only has one document to deal with (more about that tomorrow.) And that would just about do it for the “About You” section. See? Very easy.
Tomorrow, though, we’re tackling a scary subject: Submission–don’t miss it!
