Yesterday, I wrote in the Week in Review blog that June’s going to be all about cats, cats, cats. Partially because Adopt-A-Shelter Cat Month started June 1, but also because since Friday I’ve had nothing but cats on the brain, thanks to Tabby and Mr. Meow.
It all started about two weeks ago, when they made huge strides tolerating each other again, like they had done in the very beginning. I dared to hope that my positive reinforcement approach was working. By the end of May, The Great Cat Rehabilitation Project was nearly complete. All I needed to see Mr. Meow do to know it was fully complete was to (a) come upstairs again for shower buddy time, and (b) snuggle in bed with me like he used to.
Well, Friday June 1 was also Hug Your Cat Day but we haven’t entirely stopped celebrating that day yet. Mr. Meow and Tabby have just given us entirely too much reason to hug them lately.
Saturday, Wayne woke up to find Mr. Meow upstairs waiting outside our bedroom door. Sunday and Monday was more of the same. But today he took it first one step, then another step even further.
Not only was he upstairs when I got up, he didn’t run right downstairs ahead of Tabby and Murph. He waited. About an hour later, the house was too quiet and no cats were anywhere to be found downstairs. That’s because they were BOTH upstairs. Mr. Meow under the bed in the spare room, and a confused looking Tabby waiting in the hall.
After verifying Mr. Meow was fine, I went to take my shower and guess who joined me? Yep, none other than Mr. Meow.
Not since Tabby’s arrival in early February has he done that. He drank from the shower head and everything. (He’s always loved water and drinking from faucets, spouts, spigots, you name it, so years ago I bought a handheld kind to humor this quirk of his.)
So…one down, one more to go. I don’t know if he’ll ever be so bold to come snuggle in bed with Tabby there (because she’s always with us), but seeing the strides he’s made with everything else gives me hope he just might.
