The Great Large Dog Road Trip

Success! After weeks of web surfing, emailing, calling, and questioning, I’ve finally found an apartment that is willing to take me and my two dogs, Moose and Lally. We’ll be headed west from New Jersey on May 7th.

And there’s about a million things to do beforehand. Have to call the vet and schedule appointments for both dogs — I want to make sure they get a complete physical and have refills on things like heartworm preventative and flea/tick preventative. I’ll also need a copy of their vet records to come with me.

I’m going to get one of those stretchy cargo nets to string between the front seats to keep any four-footed passengers in the back seat where they belong. The back of the wagon will be loaded with apartment stuff; the front seat is for my map, snacks, drinks, purse, pup supplies, and overnight bag.

The tentative plan is to leave first thing Monday the 7th and hopefully hit Oregon on Friday the 11th. Moose and Lally have driven back and forth to Vermont with me before, and both are very good car riders. Lally often curls up in the foot well in the back seat and snoozes; Moose likes to look out the window for a while but eventually sprawls out on the back seat to nap.

As far as the driving plan goes, I’m hoping to stop every three hours or so for bathroom breaks and stretching. That will hopefully keep me from getting too bored or tired and keep the pups from getting too restless. If we can drive nine hours per day, we’ll hit our new home on Friday.

As far as lodging goes, I know the dogs will be welcome at any Accor hotels, like Red Roof Inn and Motel 6.

It’s going to be an adventure, for sure. And don’t worry… I’ll take lots of pictures.
