What or who would you describe as being the greatest influence on your life? That was a question asked recently of Brett Kirk and the footballer, a legend here in Australia and especially in Sydney, said his wife Hayley was the greatest influence on his life.
What a lovely comment that is. It made me wonder how many of us would like to be described that way by our spouse or how many of us can describe our spouse that way. I know Mick is a great influence on my life. He is always there to cheer on and encourage me. As a writer that’s often needed, believe me, as the writing life can be filled with ups and downs.
Asked about the sort of influence she has had, Hayley Kirk said she provided a balance for her husband away from football and ‘helped keep his feet on the ground when they needed to be.’
We all need someone in our lives who will keep us focused and grounded in realty. We need someone who helps us through the changes life often throws up. That person should ideally be our spouse. Going through changes together and knowing there is that special someone you can talk to and who is always on your side makes so much difference.
This week Mick and I, along with our daughter and her husband, were all together and we watched Brett Kirk make a lap of honor at the SCG for his final game on that ground, since he is retiring this year. His wife and four little children were right by his side, supporting him as always and going around the ground saying thanks to the fans. It was lovely to see.
Our spouse should not only be the one to inspire us to be the best we can be, they should then be there with us to celebrate the milestones and pick us up and help us in the hard times. Our spouse should be the one who helps keep you grounded and remain true to the person you are. Is that how you feel about your spouse?
