Valentines Day- the day for lovers has been and gone. All the restaurants in the area had special Valentines Day lunches and dinners offered, some with a free rose or glass of champagne. Shops made a fortune encouraging people to but expensive gifts to show how much they loved their Valentines.
Thanks to our media we hear a lot about love and from books we learn about the great love stories. Among the great love stories of Romeo and Juliet, Anthony and Cleopatra, etc there’s one love story that stands out. It surpasses all of them and it involved the most precious gift of all.
The Greatest love story of all time is the story of God’s love for each one of us. God loved us so much he sent His Son into the world to take the penalty that should rightfully be ours for the way we sin and turn away from God and try and live our lives without Him.
Jesus died and paid the penalty for our sin so we wouldn’t have to. The trouble is for those who go to church and bible study regularly we’ve heard those words so many times that it’s like they’ve lost they impact. We can tend to forget what a huge, costly sacrifice that was. We tend to forget how that should make a difference in our lives. The truth is we become complacent and really take God and what Jesus did for granted.
Make no mistake; Jesus could have come down from the cross any time he liked. He had the power to do so. But if he had done that, he would have saved himself but we wouldn’t have been saved. It’s as simple as that.
His death as the perfect unblemished Lamb of God was the only sacrifice acceptable to pay the price for sin and make things right. What greater love is there than that!
As our minister put it on Sunday, Jesus ‘gave up everything so we can have everything.’ By that he meant, abundant life now and the promise and hope for the future.
