What do you consider to be the greatest love story ever told? I’m sure we might all have different opinions on that.
On Thursday night Mick and I and another couple of married friends went to see a production of William Shakespeare’s, Romeo and Juliet. To many people this story of star crossed lovers from warring families is considered to be one of the great love stories. Certainly our local drama company put on an excellent performance which we enjoyed immensely, as we do nearly all their production. We quickly became caught up in the story unfolding before our eyes and almost forgot the language was a little different to how we speak today.
Two things struck me as I watched Romeo and Juliet which I had never seen live before. We are very thankful we have such a professional group close by, as Mick and I love live theatre. The second point was how closely West Side Story was aligned with the Romeo and Juliet start with the difference in the ending that Juliet aka Maria doesn’t die.
Reading he program at interval I had to smile when I read the thoughts of the director, Lisa. She said, ‘The greatest test of one‘s devotion to those we love is not to die but to live for them. Romeo and Juliet is often referred to as ” the greatest love story ever told,” but I think the greatest love stories are those remarkable couples that get to celebrate their 60th wedding anniversary and pass on to their families a legacy of commitment and deviation.’ I couldn’t agree more with her thoughts.
Recently a local couple celebrated their 62nd wedding anniversary. Bette and Dick chose to celebrate their 62nd wedding anniversary because they consider being together is such a joy and so precious and that ‘every day is special.’ Too me that says more about love, devotion and commitment. I’m hoping Mick and I will one day get to 60 or 62 years. For now, it’s just about enjoying each day as it comes.
