Now, I know that my gardening habits are a little eccentric at the best of times, but you know that these habits have gotten to seriously silly proportions when your four-year-old begins to find you amusing.
This weekend I spent an inordinately large amount of time in the garden, and this was a wonderful thing. I spent some time cat-proofing it (fingers crossed) and a lot of time moving my perennials. I discovered that I am the proud owner of sixteen berry bushes, which is pretty good for someone who counts her garden space in meters instead of acres.
My daughter and I also went on an adventure to search for new trellises for the garden. I love to reuse old items in the garden, and I was in search of a combination fence and trellis. Keep the cats out, keep the peas and beans growing – that’s the plan. I priced wooden lattices, and they were expensive. I also feel a little guilty buying new wood to plant in my garden when there are so many unused pieces of trellis out there. I set off on a web search to look for trellis ideas, and I came upon many headboards on Craigslist.
Today we picked up several headboards, brought them home, and installed them in the garden. I think that they look lovely. My husband is distinctly uncertain about them but has nodded with approval at the appropriate times. My daughter? Well, as I struggled to get yet another headboard into our tiny vehicle, flipping it this way and that and moving the seats around to create more space, she couldn’t stop laughing. Apparently I was ridiculous.
Oh dear. If she can’t stop laughing now, I cringe to think of what might happen in a few years. In the meantime, there are a few more spaces in the garden fence.
What is the strangest thing that you’ve installed in your garden?
