While I am a big believer in decluttering whenever and wherever you can, there are just some circumstances where you really need help. I would not recommend that you declutter certain rooms or areas in your home alone. You’ll just wind up in trouble at worst or discouraged at best.
Whenever you are ready to declutter the attic, basement, garage or home office, enlist some help. The reason being that these areas are usually filled with lots of furniture, boxes and heavy items. It is easy to get bogged down.
You may also find that these areas collect with things that you either once used or once thought were important. Sometimes these items are gifts that you don’t know what to do with. They may have some emotional attachment or even guilt associated with these items.
Schedule a friend or even a professional to work with you. Another bonus of having the extra help? You are more likely to carve our a specific time to get it done and stick with the plan.
The best way to attack these rooms is as if they were big closets. Start at the back and work toward the front. This means that you will begin at the back corners and work your way toward the middle of the room.
The reason for this approach is that in most homes, the junk that you don’t need and don’t use tends to collect in those back corners. Chances are that you haven’t even seen much of the stuff, either. This means that you may find it easy to toss things quickly. This will open up more space for you to work in and give you the encouragement you need to keep going.
Make sure that you have everything in place that you will need. Along with your helper, you may need a truck for furniture that is going out (or at least an arrangement with a local charity for pick up) and the bags and boxes for collection.
