- “Have mercy on me, O LORD, for I am weak; O LORD, heal me, for my bones are troubled; but You, O LORD—how long? … I am weary with my groaning; all night I make my bed swim; I drench my couch with my tears… For the LORD has heard the voice of my weeping. The LORD has heard my supplication; the LORD will receive my prayer.” (Psalm 6: 2-3, 6, 8-9)
Have you ever found yourself feeling like David has in the Psalms? I sure have. Unfortunately, during our times of brokenness we may be reluctant to take the opportunity to cry out to Jesus for His peace and comfort or mercy. Some wonder if their worries are worth God’s concern; after all, there are so many bigger things for God to attend to right? As humans we may find ourselves prioritizing and dividing up our time trying to function as efficient as possible. Thankfully, God doesn’t work like we do. He isn’t limited to one destination at a time or become too tired at the end of the day to meet all of our needs. I really believe that what matters to us matters to God. I can’t help but think this as I see the concerns my kids sometimes have, whether significant in the big picture of life or not. I care about what bothers them.
God indeed cares about our broken hearts:
- “The Spirit of the LORD is upon Me, because He has anointed Me to preach the gospel to the poor; He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives and recovery of sight to the blind, to set at liberty those who are oppressed.” (Luke 4:18)
- “The righteous cry out, and the LORD hears, and delivers them out of all their troubles. The LORD is near to those who have a broken heart, and saves such as have a contrite spirit.” (Psalm 34:17-18)
Whether you’ve had an argument with your spouse, lost someone close to you, or feel shame regarding something you’ve done, please know God doesn’t take measurement of our wounds and heal according to the greatest need. He is just as capable of healing a heart in tremendous agony as He is the downcast heart. All we need to do is cry out to Him and know He really does hear us. As Psalm 34:17 states the righteous cry out, please know this isn’t talking about us having to be perfect; we’re not righteous on our own, but because of Jesus who dwells in our hearts. There is truly no greater healer of a broken heart then Jesus Christ. Only He is able to give us an authentic joy in the darkest of times.
When our car needs fixing, we take it to an auto mechanic. When our body needs fixing, we visit our doctor. When it’s our spirit that needs fixing, we ought to take it to Jesus.
- “Wait on the LORD; be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart; wait, I say, on the LORD!” (Psalm 27:14)
