The Health Benefits of Strawberries

Since May is National Strawberry Month, I want to celebrate by singing the praises of the health benefits of strawberries. Strawberries are credited with many health benefits along with great taste so this little berry is sure to be a crowd pleaser in your home. The best feature is that rarely does anyone have to be convinced to eat a strawberry.

The Basics:

One cup of strawberries contains 13% of the RDA of dietary fiber. At only 53 calories per cup of sliced strawberries this is a healthy and delicious way to increase your fiber intake and regulate your digestion. Filled with vitamin C and K, the rich red color of the strawberry comes from anthocyanin which is an antioxidant. Strawberries have been determined to have a low glycemic index of 40.

Health Benefits:

Anti-inflammatory: Strawberries contain phenols which have the same effect as ibuprofen and aspirin on inflammatory diseases by inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase. One cup of strawberries also contains 21% of manganese which acts as an anti-inflammatory agent.

Anti-Cancer: Strawberries defend against cancerous cells due to vitamin C, folate, kaempferol, and the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory agents found within the berry.

Eye Health: You can decrease your chance of developing macular degeneration by eating three servings of strawberries or fruit a day.

Vitamin C: Strawberries pack a powerful punch of vitamin C to ward off high blood pressure, ocular diseases, and strengthen the immune system. Over 100% of your daily dose of vitamin C is in one cup of strawberries.

Cardiovascular system: Strawberries can help reduce your risk of coronary heart diseases.

Bone Health: Containing vitamin K, potassium and magnesium, strawberries also contribute to healthy bones. Manganese not only serves as a anti-inflammatory but acts as an agent to build bones and maintain structure.

With all the health benefits and the low caloric intake, strawberries make a great addition to your diet.
