For most parents, the sky’s the limit when it comes to budgeting for professional photos of their children. Of course, these days you almost have to dig deep if you want personalized pictures of your kids. Professional infant photography has come a long way since the days when naked babies were placed on bearskin rugs and mom and dad cooed in the corner as the photographer snapped a few cute shots. Today, baby photography is a sophisticated genre which aims to produce high-quality artistic images that will last for generations.
Still, there are a slew of camera-wielding parents out there who either don’t have the money to pay for a pro to photograph their child or don’t want to spend an arm and a leg on images, and try to accomplish the task on their own. I understand the desire to save money, but, in my opinion, if you are a beginner photographer and you want to capture Anne Geddes-type images of your infant, then you are better off hiring a professional. Fortunately, most professional photographers, who work alone, do not limit picture-taking to the inside of a sterile studio. Rather, they travel to the client’s home, parks and other outdoor spaces to create personal and meaningful backdrops to stunning images.
An added bonus to working with photographers, who specialize in child photography, is that they are constantly looking for innovative ways to make their photos as fresh as possible. Often, they use unusual props to add spice to ordinary infant shots. For example, rather that simply shooting a baby on a blanket, the professional photographer may opt to pose the child in a basket surrounded by flowers or in an antique suitcase, large mixing bowl or tucked against a parent’s chest.
All this creativity comes with a hefty price tag. Depending on the length of the session and the number of poses you request, some child photography sessions can exceed $500. Often, that is just the price for the sitting fee. If you want to purchase a disc of all the photos and the copyright, or select prints, then you are looking at prices closing in at $1,000.
