The Hippopotamus Pool – Elizabeth Peters

The next novel in the Amelia Peabody series is “The Hippopotamus Pool.” Emerson and Amelia have determined that Nefret, their young charge, is now ready to accompany them on an archaeological dig and they make plans to return to Egypt as a family. They’ve decided to build a house in a location that is central to their main areas of focus so they don’t have to rely on makeshift camps every time they go. Amelia can’t wait to sink her teeth into the project.

Shortly before they are scheduled to leave, a child of in-laws Walter and Evelyn’s passes away, and it sends them all into grieving. Not willing to put a halt to the Emerson’s plans, Evelyn insists that they go on their dig, but Amelia can’t help but wonder if it’s wise to leave her in that state.

Shortly after their arrival in Cairo, they are visited by a strange man who shows them a ring and tells them he knows where the tomb of Tetisheri is located. Unfortunately, he ends up dying before he’s able to share the particulars. Isn’t that always the way with strange informants?

As the Emersons begin to hunt for the perfect spot to build their house, they find evidence that the illegal antiquities market is running strong. The former ringleader, their arch enemy Sethos, is dead. Who is in charge of it now?

Towing a completely useless governess across the wilderness with them, the Emersons follow the clues and find not only the evidence of smuggling they were looking for, but further evidence that the tomb of Tetisheri really does exist. Will they be able to excavate it before they are murdered by the tomb robbers who want the antiquities every bit as much as they do? And will they be able to keep Nefret from succumbing to the charms of Sir Edward Washington in the process? Realizing they need help, they send for Walter and Evelyn, hoping that the four of them will be able to unlock the mystery in time.
