The Importance of Early Typing Lessons

Computers are becoming more and more prominent in our day to day lives. If you want your children to succeed in school it can be a good idea to try and teach them some basic computer skills before they ever go to kindergarten. One of the first things your kids will have to learn is how to use the computer keyboard, and how to type.

When I was a child, keyboarding was something you could take as an elective in eighth grade, but not a mandatory class. I opted to take band instead, and some when I got to high school I was still typing using two fingers rather than both hands.

Without knowing how to properly use a keyboard many children will run into problems doing research for school, or trying to type papers. The earlier your child picks up some basic keyboard skills, the better off they will be using computers in the future.

One site I came across to help younger children learn keyboarding is a Keyboard Dance Party, posted on the BBC’s website. The site has four different keyboarding levels each with twelve different lessons in keyboarding for your children. The site turns learning keyboarding into a game, so your children can enjoy leaning.

One of my coworkers has already had trouble typing and I sent her a link to this site. She said that she had a fantastic time working through the lessons, and is obviously a much better typist now that she has gone through the program. The program is obviously designed for children, but works well for older learners as well.

Keyboarding Dance Party can be found on the BBC’s website here. If the dance party isn’t for you there are several other great keyboarding tutorials online that can be found by doing a search on google.com.
