Do you need to put your budget on a diet after the extravagance of the holidays? Here are some simple ways to get back on track quickly. You don’t want to have to still be paying those bills in March.
Cook from the Pantry
Skip a grocery shopping trip or two or three. Just purchase the essential perishable stuff, such as milk and eggs. If you challenge yourself to cook only from your pantry, you’ll be able to save money quickly. Take that money and apply it directly to your bills. It can add up quickly over a couple of weeks. You may have to get a little creative with your meals, but you may be surprised at the number of meals you will be able to create from scratch with just the ingredients that you have on hand.
Skip the Meals Out
Another food-related savings when you skip going out to eat. This also goes for lunches at work, snacks on the go, etc. Take a little extra time to pack meals and snacks if you won’t be home, and to plan out regular meals for when you will be home. This meal planning and preparation can save you anywhere from $2 to $25 a day, depending on your current habits.
Skip the Errands
I always seem to find myself spending at Target. If I am not careful, I can go into the store for batteries and come out with batteries, plus vitamins, plus laundry detergent, plus a spot rug for the high traffic area near the garage door, plus some extra snacks for the kids, plus whatever was on clearance. Skip all non-essential errands, especially those near your favorite stores to avoid the opportunity to spend.
Find a New Way to Shop
If your child suddenly puts a hole in his winter coat and needs a new one, consider shopping differently and saving the difference. A thrift store coat may cost you $5 as opposed to $60. Use the savings toward your bills. Not ready for thrift shops? Try consignment shops instead. The savings isn’t as great, but still better than retail in most cases.
