The Joke’s On You

Aside from Christmas and her birthday, my 6-year-old’s favorite day of the year is April 1st. My little prankster gets her jollies on the day dedicated to making a fool out of others. Only, at 6, her idea of a killer April Fool’s prank is to hide my hairbrush under her bed and watch me scramble around the house looking for it. Okay, I guess that is pretty funny.

Still, this year she wants to go bigger, better, and funnier by coming up with a doozy of a joke to play on the friends we are planning to meet up with on Friday to see the movie, “HOP.”

HELP!

Really.

I need help finding G-rated pranks that are suitable for kids to play on their peers. Despite more than an hour surfing the net, I only found a couple of tricks that are mildly funny and could be pulled off by a first grader. The rest requires electric tape, power tools, fake feces or mild explosives. None of which I find the least bit amusing.

So, I am imploring you, the wonderful readers of Families.com, if you have a kid-friendly April Fool’s prank that has gone off without a hitch in previous years, I am begging you to share it in the comment section. Just keep it clean and simple… I’m not exactly a whiz when it comes to construction.

In the meantime, if you are looking to prank a teen or a grown-up in your home, you might consider this easy trick I found on an interesting website called Instructables.com. The site is a clearinghouse of sorts for extreme pranksters to share their wiles with the rest of the world.

DOOR LOCK PRANK

Basically, you are locking an unsuspecting person in a room and forcing him to remain there until you release him. Naturally, you don’t want to play this trick on a younger child. On the other hand, if you want a break from your spouse, then the trick might come in handy. The best part is that you can set-up the trick, walk away, and the victim activates the prank himself. According to the prank’s author: “Once the victim enters their room and shuts the door behind them, the torture has begun!”

Here’s what you need to do: Find a room with a door knob that features a push-button or twist lock. Next, remove the entire door knob assembly. Then, put the knob back on the door backwards, so the lock is on the outside of the room. Obviously, this prank works best if the victim is oblivious because if he notices that the door knob is on backwards, the joke will be on you.
