Last Saturday we visited one of our favorite places- a food warehouse. From the moment you walk in the door the smell of Indian and Asian spices wafts around you. It’s great.
We bought our share of gluten free products, shedded coconut, dried lentil and beans, a kilogram (which is over two pounds) of chili flakes and a large number of dried cranberries imported from the USA. The guy on the checkout as he rang our items up had a chuckle about the number of bulk packets of dried cranberries we bought. What can I say? Mick and I love cranberries and have them on our breakfast cereal but also have been known to snack on them straight from the packet. I tend to put them in lots of dishes as well.
Whenever we go to Sydney and need groceries, especially things that are often not available in our supermarkets down here, or just cheaper there, we call in. Because Sydney is far more multicultural than we are here many of the products we see there are not available here.
The time before when we were there we bought Anardana powder which is dried pomegranate and a number of other Mangal brand products which will help make any number of Indian Masala dishes and packets of Gits Dosai which makes traditional South Indian snacks. They are like a lentil and rice pancake. I haven’t made those yet. Or the Idles which is another type of steamed cake of South Indian origin. Just as well I’ve got a husband who’s prepared to try anything new, at least once. You never know what you might discover when you try new things.
Not everything is cheap. It’s a matter of knowing your prices and stocking up on the many things that are and not worrying about the few that aren’t. The people who run it are very friendly
For those of you in Sydney, they are Stelissa, Oriental and Continental Foods at 43 Carlotta Street Artarmon. It is open Monday to Saturday. It’s well worth a visit.Of course it helps if you’ve got a big pantry to store all the good buys.
