The Kitchen Saga, Part Two

stone

Next week was supposed to be the week our kitchen renovation took place. The kitchen would be demolished, nasty cupboards with a whole lot of dry rot moved out, and lovely cupboards moved in. Ah, the bliss.

Unfortunately, that is no longer next week. Now – with my fingers crossed – I’m hoping for the first full week of February.

Why? Well, as per usual in renovation land, things change. What changed for us was the flooring. We would like to have flooring that is consistent across our kitchen and hallway. We’d like to stop ice skating as we slide into the front hall on a rainy day, so a slightly nubbly tile seemed to be the way to go. Oh yes, and we enjoy breaking things on the kitchen floor – hence the desire for tile.

Anyway, the tile person came to look at our floors and discovered a whole lot of bounce in the floor. Unfortunately, you can’t put tiles on a bouncy floor. Well, you can, but they’ll get some nice cracks in the grout lines and you’ll be retiling before you know it. Since we only plan to renovate our kitchen once, we weren’t too keen on that idea.

While our townhouse is pretty well made, it’s definitely the family restaurant of townhouses. It’s nothing fancy, and they certainly don’t have fantastically detail-oriented finishing.
Apparently the beams underneath our kitchen require more screws. They also need more plywood on top. Who knew. So now we can’t do the cabinets first, as planned, since they’d make our floor swoop and sag even more. No, now we’re going to remove the entire kitchen, do the floors for a week and a bit, and then do the cabinets.

That is, IF all goes according to plan. And as any of you who’ve lived through renovations know, that isn’t always the case. Stay tuned.
