The Lighthouse

I was browsing eBay today and came across some certified prints from one of my favorite artists, Thomas Kinkade. One in particular of a lighthouse really inspired me to write. Well, actually, what it did was remind me of a song sung by the Christian band Audio Adrenaline called “Lighthouse” (lyrics provided at the bottom of this article).

lighthouse

I began to think of my life and what it was like when I was drifting aimlessly while my eyes were shut. I can recall the spiritual battle for my soul; one side encouraging me to open my eyes and fix them on Jesus, and the other wanting me to just lay there and drift. When inserting myself into the metaphor the song provides, I can remember having my eyes set on the “Lighthouse” which was guiding me, but the current was strong and wanted to pull me back in.

When we see Jesus as a lighthouse, we can see Him as the One who guides the drifters to shore. I think it’s a beautiful depiction of His love and character. We do have help along the way to come to shore. The further we are adrift, the more difficult it might be to swim back, but the reward is the same; the appreciation from where the Lord has brought one is great.

Though the Bible doesn’t actually describe Jesus as a lighthouse, it does refer to Him as a light—He refers to Himself as the light of the world. What a wonderful and glorious Lord we serve to guide us out of times of trouble if we will just fix our eyes on Him.

Next time you see a lighthouse, I hope you’ll take the time to thank Jesus for His guidance in your life. While waves crash the rocks, the lighthouse stands tall and firm; it’s there for any drifter to see.

  • “The LORD is my light and my salvation: Whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?” (Psalm 27:1)
  • “I am the light of the world. He who follows Me shall not walk in darkness, but have the light of life.” (John 8:12)

Bouncing like a buoy

drifting on the water

Singletary solitute man begins to holler

he says man overboard

I jump ship on the trip

it was a worldwide cruise

trading riches for some fishes

I’ve got nothing more to lose

I’m a man overboard

I’m a man overboard

If it wasn’t for the lighthouse

where would my life be?

On a trip bound for nowhere

on a unforgiving sea

I thank God for the light

Legs and arms are burning

I swim against the tide

keep an eye above the water

so I can see the light

I’m a man overboard

I dream about the saviour

I dream about the shore

I feel the sand

You take my hand

and we will walk forevermore

I’m a man overboard

I’m a man overboard

If it wasn’t for the lighthouse

where would my life be?

On a ship bound for nowhere

on an unforgiving sea

I thank God

If it wasn’t for the lighthouse

where would my life be?

On a ship bound for nowhere

on an unforgiving sea

I thank God for the lighthouse

I thank God for the light
