The Little Things Do Affect Your Budget

The little things add up. If you are looking for extra money in your budget, or if you are wondering where all of your extra money goes after you pay your bills, it is time to take a look at the little items that you and your family purchase on a regular basis. This may be something that you do not even consider large enough to budget for, or take the time to factor in the long-term effects of these little expenses.

You may justify that you can spend the extra dollar or two for candy bar or snack when you fill up the car or at the check out line at the grocery store. It may be that you do not realize the extra cost of popcorn when you take your family out to the movies. Dessert when you eat out at a restaurant often runs at least five dollars a serving. These little expenses can add up quickly, and may be what is breaking your budget.

Many people will argue that these small expenses really do not make a big difference in the long run. If consider shortly the example of going to the movies. The popcorn and refreshments usually end up costing an additional ten dollars a visit. This is not a huge expense if you think it is only ten dollars. But if you go to the movies once a week, you can save $520.00 a year by skipping the popcorn and drink.

One of my biggest weaknesses is my sweet tooth. I will sneak some sort of candy into the grocery budget whenever I stop to pick up bread, milk or do my major shopping. I am sure if I added up the amount that I spend a year, I would be horrified. I will not even mention all those unnecessary calories. You may want to identify just one area that you monitor every day and cut back on. The extra money can be applied to debt repayment, savings or a vacation fund. You will be surprised at how much you save.

If you truly can afford the expenses, there is no reason to cut back. Also it is okay to splurge on these items occasionally. Budgeting should not make you feel as though your life has ended. It is important to create positive memories with your family, and enjoy life along the way. At the same time, limiting these experiences can make them even more special. If you are overwhelmed by items you are less likely to be grateful for what you have.
