If you’re looking for a fun and entertaining way to teach your children about bugs, “The Magic School Bus: Bugs, Bugs, Bugs!” is a great way to go about it.
Our intrepid and joyful teacher, Miss Frizzle, takes her class on three amazing field trips. First, we go “In a Beehive” and see the children become bees. They learn all kinds of amazing things about bees, including how to care for bee larvae and help them grow up to become adult bees, how nectar is turned into honey, how many trips from flower to hive it takes to make a teaspoon of honey, and – this part was my favorite – the ways in which bees communicate with each other. They do a little dance to tell the other bees how far away the flowers are and the best way to get there. It’s really amazing.
We all know ants are busy little creatures, but do we really understand everything they do? “Ants in the Pants” shows us the incredible world of ants and explains their place in the world.
“Butterfly and the Bog Beast” shows the children as they try to decide on a new mascot for their school. They have a game tomorrow against the Bulldogs, and they want a mascot that sounds like it could beat a bulldog. They want something unusual, something powerful, something no one has ever thought of. Arnold’s cousin Janet shows up in time to suggest Bog Beasts, but Phoebe would like to call the team “The Butterflies.” Miss Frizzle takes the children into the swamp in search of a bog beast, and at the same time, they learn all about butterflies, including why the butterflies are colored the way they are. It’s not just to be pretty—it’s for camouflage.
I really enjoy watching The Magic School Bus with my children. We all learn something together, and it’s a lot of fun, besides.
