The Magic School Bus: Creepy, Crawly Fun (1994)

aacI can’t think of any other children’s television show that illustrates science so creatively as “The Magic School Bus.” You can get most of these awesome episodes on video and DVD to watch whenever you like. Today my children and I took a look at “Creepy, Crawly Fun.” It was creepy. It was crawly. And it was fun.

The DVD contains three episodes. In the first, “Inside the Haunted House,” Carlos is trying to invent a new musical instrument that will really knock the socks off the competition at the band tournament. But no matter how he tweaks his invention, it just doesn’t sound right. Miss Frizzle takes the class to an old haunted mansion that’s set up to explore different types of sound, and Carlos learns that in order to make his instrument sound right, it needs to be able to vibrate.

The second installment is called “Going Batty.” Miss Frizzle has asked the children’s parents to come to the school after dark for a special presentation, but when they all arrive, she’s wearing a cape. Through the evening, she makes a series of comments that lead the children to believe she’s a vampire who wants to eat their parents. Of course, this is all a big misunderstanding, but in the meantime, the children learn all about echo location and the secret lives of bats.

We ended up our show with “Spins a Web.” The children go inside a movie to save a friendly mantis from being taken prisoner by an over-zealous General—all the mantis really wants is a hamburger. The children learn how to spin a web to catch the General before he can catch the mantis, and we learn how spiders creatively lure and catch their prey.

We enjoyed this educational DVD and plan to watch all the others in the series. Nothing like being entertained and educated at the same time! This film was not rated.
