The women of today are at the same crossroads as many large companies in this modern world of ours. Businesses are being forced to change their wicked and not so wicked ways in order to survive powerful economic and societal shifts. The irony here is not so poetic, for American businesses competing with powerhouses all over the world are doing so by utilizing only half of their available talent pool: namely, the male half. No prejudice or malice intended here, for I appreciate men as much as any woman. Still, it is a crying shame and a naked truth that for whatever reasons, women have become the largest and most under-utilized resource in the United States.
The situation can be corrected fairly quickly if CEOs would just come back from lunch and make a executive decision about giving women a greater opportunity to fill the gap in their companies for better paying jobs. Women and the large corporations seek the very same solutions; only the corporations do not know it yet. New off-shoots of industries spawned by the perilous times in which we live have profoundly affected communications and other related fields, especially in the wake of 9/11 and the havoc of communication failures during Katrina. Industries such as homeland security, wireless and satellite phones and alternate energy sources all have to ramp up fast and could do it much faster by hiring women to fill some of these jobs.
For many women, telecommuting is the right balance for their busy lives. Businesses could offset the competition from India and other such places by hiring (at a higher rate of pay) a more productive and efficient work force of women with flexible work schedules.
The moral of this story is that both women and American businesses will be able to run much faster if they run together in the same race.
So if you are a big company CEO reading this, what are you waiting for?
