The Most Popular Hotel Room in Washington, D.C.

It is now… and for all the wrong reasons.

If the walls in Room 871 at the Renaissance Mayflower Hotel in Washington, D.C. could talk I’m sure former New York Governor Eliot Spitzer’s high-priced call girl wouldn’t have been offered nearly as many lucrative book deals.

Since the Spitzer sex scandal broke hotel managers say they have had dozens of people calling to book a night in the now infamous room. But, according to hotel big wigs, guests can ask for Room 871, but they might not get it. Apparently, standard operating procedure dictates that guests can’t be guaranteed a specific room unless it is a special booking such as the honeymoon suite.

That hasn’t made much difference to some souvenir hunters. The hotel reportedly has had a number of vandals remove the plaque bearing the number of the eighth-floor room where the famous politician fell from grace. The sign has since been replaced… more than once. And in case you are wondering, Room 871 is a corner standard king on a club floor with a rate of $400 nightly. Which is a real bargain considering how much the former governor spent on the activities that took place behind 871’s door.

Not interested in spending your spring break waiting in line for a room where weakness got the best of a married man? I don’t blame you.

Consider then a trip down south–all the way to Alabama. Think quiet sunsets and a laid-back lifestyle. Or, if you are looking for something a bit more exciting head down to concerts at The Wharf in Orange Beach, an entertainment and shopping venue. Gulf State Park, between Gulf Shores and Orange Beach, also attracts big crowds filled with sun seekers on the hunt for live music and great food. Other spring break hotspots include Flora-Bama Lounge on the Alabama-Florida border at Perdido Key, and at Lulu’s, run by singer Jimmy Buffett’s sister, Lucy, on the Intracoastal Waterway in Gulf Shores.

Spring is also prime bird watching season at Bon Secour National Wildlife Refuge, Fort Morgan Historical Park and Fort Gaines at Dauphin Island. A bird-banding event will be held at Fort Morgan March 29th-April 11th. That’s where you will be able to watch as conservationists band migratory birds making landfall on Alabama’s shores from South and Central America.
